SYMBOL VICTORY & PROTECTION
The Banner of God
A Symbol of Victory and Protection
A banner is a powerful symbol of victory, protection, and guidance for people. It serves not only as a standard for a military troop but also embodies the identity and strength of the one it represents. Understanding God as our Banner invites us to find comfort and strength in His protection and the assurance of victory through Him.
The first notable reference to God as a Banner is in Exodus 17:15, which is just after Moses led the Israelites to victory over the Amalekites. Moses declares, “And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi: For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.” Here, "Jehovah-Nissi" translates to “The Lord is my Banner,” signifying God’s leadership and His assurance of victory in battle. Moses named the altar “Jehovah-Nissi” to serve the Israelites as a reminder of God's continual presence and support as they faced adversaries.
Not only is His banner a source of victory, but it also symbolizes protection. The Psalmist offers this same perspective in Psalm 60:4. He writes, “Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth. (Psalm 60:4)” The Psalmist shows that God’s banner is a protective standard for His faithful followers. It reassures us that, under God’s banner, we are safeguarded by His truth and strength to face challenges without fear.
The Old Testament image of God as a banner finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Isaiah 11:10, ”And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.” This prophesied that the Messiah ("a root of Jesse") would be a universal ensign, drawing all nations to himself. Jesus made this promise (John 12:32) and fulfilled this prophecy, drawing all people to Himself. The banner symbolizes this universal gathering, representing God's protective embrace. The New Testament confirms this, declaring Jesus the ultimate banner of victory. (1 Corinthians 15:57). His victory over sin and death established Him as the strength and banner for believers.
In conclusion, while the Old Testament foreshadows God's role as a banner of victory and protection, the ultimate fulfillment is found in Jesus Christ. From the victories of the Israelites to the ultimate victory over sin and death secured through Christ's sacrifice, the concept of "Jehovah-Nissi" points to His unwavering support and strength. Embracing Jesus as our banner encourages us to stand firm in our faith, knowing that our victory and protection are solely in Him. This protection is spiritual, a strength in the face of adversity, guidance through trials, and the assurance of eternal life, so through Him, we find victory in every challenge we encounter.
